An 85-year-old Florida man has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash after allegedly hitting and killing a 91-year-old woman in a Publix grocery store parking lot on Friday, then driving home.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, Darrell Briggs, 85, admitted he knew he had hit “something” in the parking lot but chose not to stop.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. in the Publix parking lot in St. Petersburg, where Briggs’ vehicle allegedly struck Mary Broughton, 91. She was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from her injuries.
Investigators said Briggs drove away from the scene and went to his nearby apartment. Officers later located both Briggs and his vehicle at the residence. During questioning, Briggs allegedly confessed to realizing he had struck “something”, according to court documents.
Briggs was arrested and booked into the Pinellas County Jail on one felony count of leaving the scene of a crash involving death. He posted a $50,000 bond and was released on Sunday.
