A blast of cold air has over central South Carolina this morning, bringing strong winds and freezing temperatures to much of the Midlands until tonight. The National Weather Service (NWS) Columbia has issued a Lake Wind Advisory until Monday evening, with gusts of up to 30 mph expected.
Temperatures will struggle to rise beyond the 40s this afternoon, remaining 25–30 degrees colder than Sunday. By tonight, temperatures will drop into the 20s, with wind chills in the teens across the region. The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for all of central South Carolina, thus ending the growing season.
Residents are encouraged to cover exposed pipes, bring pets indoors, and check on those without adequate heat. Sensitive plants should be covered or taken indoors before dark.
Temperatures will progressively rise later this week, but another round of below-freezing temperatures is anticipated Tuesday morning before a gradual warmup begins midweek.
