A routine traffic stop in Miami-Dade County turned deadly Friday when a deputy was disarmed and fatally shot with his own service weapon, authorities confirmed.
Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was responding to what police described as a minor vehicle crash on the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street when a verbal dispute with one of the drivers escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly overpowered and disarmed the deputy before shooting him multiple times, said Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz.
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz clarified that the incident was “not an ambush” but a sudden escalation during the confrontation.
Deputy Jaramillo was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The shooter, identified as Steven David Rustrian, 21, died by suicide inside his vehicle shortly after the shooting. A second person involved in the original crash was questioned and later released without charges.
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz described Jaramillo as a “home-grown hero” — a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Central Florida who was deeply committed to serving the Kendall District community.
Florida officials, including Governor Ron DeSantis and Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, expressed condolences, honoring Deputy Jaramillo’s dedication and sacrifice. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office homicide bureau continues to investigate the tragic incident.
