Prosecutors announced Monday that the man accused of fatally shooting San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez has been charged with murder and nine additional crimes. Deputy Nunez, 28, was responding to a domestic violence call involving the suspect’s ex-wife when he was shot.
Authorities identified the suspect as 47-year-old Angelo Jose Saldivar of San Bernardino. Before the October 27 incident, Saldivar had no prior criminal history. He allegedly shot Deputy Nunez in the head after threatening a woman at an apartment in Rancho Cucamonga.
After the shooting, Saldivar reportedly fled on a motorcycle and led law enforcement on a pursuit along the 210 Freeway in Ontario, reaching speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. The chase ended when he crashed into another vehicle and was taken to a hospital.
San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson detailed the charges, starting with murder. Additional charges include attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment by violence, and battery on a spouse involving Saldivar’s ex-wife.
Four more victims are named in the complaint. Anderson said most of these individuals were reporting parties who called 911 during the dispute. In some of those calls, gunshots could be heard. Each of the four was a victim of assault with a deadly weapon.
Saldivar also faces four counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, as well as charges for evading an officer and discharging a firearm. Prosecutors added special allegations, including murder to avoid arrest, murder of a peace officer, and personal and intentional discharge of a firearm.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus thanked the community for its support. He said Deputy Nunez’s funeral is expected to take place in about two weeks.
“Today marks the first portion of the healing process for the Nunez family,” Dicus said. “Our main focus now is assisting the prosecution and making sure the family is cared for.”
Saldivar remains in custody and will be arraigned once he is medically cleared for transport.
