A Tennessee man is in custody after allegedly shooting into a home during a dispute over unpaid mechanic work, according to Memphis Police Department. The suspect, 37-year-old Tavares Sheeks, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.
Dispute Over Car Repair Leads to Violence
The incident took place on September 21 at a home on Cloverdale Drive in the Castalia Heights neighborhood.
The victim, 91-year-old John Allen, a retired Memphis police officer, was shot in the hand and taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. Police said Allen was not the intended target.
The dispute allegedly involved Allen’s girlfriend, who had paid Sheeks $1,200 months earlier to repair her Dodge Challenger. She claimed the work was never completed and demanded her money back.
Gunfire at the Residence
According to investigators, Sheeks arrived at Allen’s home and told the woman, “I got your money.” However, when she opened the door, Sheeks and two others reportedly stood near the curb and began firing multiple rounds at the house.
Allen said he was in a bedroom and was struck when a bullet ricocheted through a wall. The home was hit around a dozen times, and six people, including a 2-year-old child, were inside during the shooting.
Arrest and Charges
Police believe the suspects fled in a silver Nissan sedan. Sheeks was arrested on Wednesday and is the only individual charged so far.
He is being held at the Shelby County Jail on a $157,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on November 3.
