A 27-year-old Irving man, Chancellor Alexander Nelson, was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to Injury to a Child Causing Serious Bodily Injury by Omission in connection with the death of his 16-month-old son. He was also charged with capital murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser crime.
The case arose from a terrible incident at an Irving home, when prosecutors allege Nelson inflicted scalding water wounds on his child’s face. Despite the severity of the injuries, the child did not receive medical attention for two days.
During that time, the toddler suffered a hypoxic episode, which produced swelling in his brain and led to organ failure. On the second day without care, the baby apparently had a six-hour seizure before being unresponsive at midnight. At this point, the child’s mother dialed 911. The child was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Detective Andy Padrutt of the Irving Police Department investigated the matter, and the District Attorney’s Office congratulated him for his thorough and sensitive work.
Nelson pleaded guilty and was sentenced on October 23, 2025, in Dallas County Criminal District Court. He’s been in detention since his arrest in August 2023.
Assistant District Attorneys Kalle Riner and Jennifer Sawyer prosecuted the case, while DA Investigator Laura Brakefield and Victim Advocate Audri Graham assisted with the investigation.
