A 13-year-old Manhattan boy was struck and killed by a semi-truck while riding his bicycle Monday evening, authorities said.
Police responded to the intersection of State Street and East North Street around 5:35 p.m. after reports of a collision involving a bicyclist and a semi-trailer.
Upon arrival, officers found the boy unresponsive beneath the truck, according to officials. The Will County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office were called to assist with the investigation.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances of the crash.
The victim, identified as an eighth-grade student at Manhattan District 114, has prompted the district to cancel all after-school activities on Tuesday as the community mourns the loss.
Tragically, this comes only days after the school district lost a sixth-grade student in an unrelated medical emergency.
