A Miami-Dade inmate whose case drew national attention after she became pregnant while behind bars has been found guilty of murdering her boyfriend, a jury ruled Thursday.
“We the jury in Miami-Dade County, Florida, find the defendant, Daisy Link, as to count one, second-degree murder, guilty of second-degree murder,” announced Judge Lody Jean as the verdict was read.
The verdict followed a weeks-long trial in which Daisy Link took the stand to defend her actions in the 2022 shooting.
“He told me he was going to lock me out of the house and that I’d have to sleep outside,” Link testified. “When I started walking toward him, I said, ‘No, you’re not. You’re going to leave.’ He said, ‘I don’t give a [expletive], I’m ready to die. You could kill me.’ Then he ran toward the house.”
“And what did you do when you saw him running toward the house to lock you out?” asked prosecutor Alex Bergida.
“I took the shot,” Link replied.
Link was convicted of second-degree murder for fatally shooting her boyfriend in an incident captured on surveillance video that showed her holding the gun, according to police. Prosecutors presented the footage during trial, arguing that the shooting stemmed from anger and not self-defense.
“She was mad as [expletive]. [He] was never home, always on the road, getting high. She was furious,” Bergida said.
Link’s attorney, Ayuban Tomas, insisted the shooting was justified.
“He was going to break into her house. She did everything she could to stop him. He refused. So she fired the gun—and it worked. He ran off into the alley,” Tomas argued.
While the murder case was already serious, Link gained national attention in 2024 after it was revealed that she became pregnant in jail through a bizarre insemination scheme involving another inmate.
Investigators said Link and inmate Joan Depaz exploited a security lapse, passing semen through an air vent using saran wrap and string.
“Everybody says it to me, ‘This is like some Lifetime Movie Network,’” Link told 7News in an exclusive interview.
Link later gave birth to a baby girl, calling the child “a miracle” and “a blessing.”
In a recorded call, her mother questioned her actions.
“Daisy, how could you?” her mother asked.
“What do you mean? I’m gonna sue ’em and get out. Do you know how much I can sue them for? This was all planned. I can get out now,” Link said.
The scandal prompted major security changes across Miami-Dade correctional facilities.
Following the guilty verdict, juror Kenyan Bowie told 7News that although one juror initially held out, the panel ultimately reached a unanimous decision.
“It was a toxic relationship,” Bowie said. “If he’s running away and shot in the back, that doesn’t seem like self-defense.”
Link is scheduled to return to court in November for her pre-sentencing hearing, and her attorney plans to appeal the conviction.
