A woman from Okeechobee faces attempted murder charges after allegedly poisoning an 11-month-old child with antifreeze while babysitting in February.
Police reported that Adamo’s arrest took place in Georgia, and she was later transferred back to Florida. The baby survived the poisoning, but investigators still don’t know how severe the lasting effects may be.
WPTV’s Michael Hoffman encountered Adamo just hours after her release from jail.
According to investigators, the incident happened in February inside a gated Okeechobee community. Adamo had been caring for the 11-month-old when the parents noticed something was wrong after picking the child up.
Medical tests revealed the baby had ingested ethylene glycol, a toxic chemical found in antifreeze. The child went into critical condition and suffered cardiac arrest for 10 minutes before doctors successfully resuscitated them.
The baby is now recovering, but the potential long-term damage remains uncertain.
“I was not surprised,” said Aiden, Adamo’s 23-year-old son.
He described his mother as cold, cruel, and “even a monster.”
Aiden recalled feeling constantly targeted by his mother during childhood, saying he used school as a refuge and left home at 15 after his parents gave up their parental rights.
“That’s just unthinkable that somebody would do that,” Aiden said.
Although horrified by the case details, Aiden admitted he wasn’t surprised. He believes his mother belongs behind bars.
“She should be in prison. I’m glad there’s something in place to stop her from watching children until she’s convicted,” he said.
“The judicial process exists for a reason. I just hope that, with all the evidence coming to light, she’s convicted and serves the prison time she deserves.”
Authorities revealed that Adamo faced similar allegations 11 years ago, but those charges were dropped.
She is now charged with attempted first-degree murder and other related offenses.
