Father Charged After 2-year-old Son Finds Gun And Shoots Himself

A father is facing charges after his son discovered a gun and shot himself.

On October 14, police were called to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital after a 2-year-old was shot in the neck.

The 2-year-old’s father told authorities that he had requested his son to retrieve his tablet from the bedroom. Moments later, the father heard a gunshot from the bedroom and informed detectives that his son had unintentionally shot himself.

The infant was transported to Saint Francis Bartlett Hospital by private vehicle before being transferred to Le Bonheur.

Officers eventually went to the shooting location on Valmont Circle and found a Glock 23 hidden under a sheet in the backyard. Police also discovered another AR-style rifle and drugs inside the home.

Devin Carter, the father, was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated child abuse-endangerment, carrying a firearm while committing a felony, and possessing marijuana with the intent to sell.

The child is now in stable condition.
