A 12-year-old girl has been charged with assault in connection with an after-school attack on a student on September 16, according to a spokesperson for the NYPD.
The arrest comes weeks after the victim, a 12-year-old girl, was allegedly battered on bustling Richmond Avenue outside Richmond Preparatory Charter School in New Springville, where she attended.
As previously stated by the victim’s mother, another student at the school threatened, pursued, and jumped the young child. Police do not reveal the identities of minors charged with crimes, and it was unclear whether the apprehended individual was a student at the institution.
The alleged attack on Sept. 16
Rebecca Sullivan, 37, of Great Kills, previously told the Advance that her daughter, a former 7th grade student at Richmond Preparatory Charter School, was surrounded by a group of students during recess, with one in particular allegedly threatening to beat her after dismissal.
Sullivan holds the belief that school officials failed to respond to her daughter’s account of the incident.
After school, Sullivan said her daughter walked inside the Taco Bell next to the school for a drink, and when she came out, she was confronted by the children.
“And then the one girl who was making the threats at recess ran up behind her, grabbed her by her hair, and pulled her to the floor, punching her, kicking her, and slapping her all over her body,” Sullivan told me. “Then she tightened the grip on my daughter’s hair and dragged her into Richmond Avenue and left her in traffic.”
While unclear why her kid was singled out, Sullivan said that she is “different” because she has a personalized schooling program for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
Sullivan, a nurse, checked her daughter’s injuries and drove her to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in Prince’s Bay the following morning. It was there that Sullivan filed a police report.
According to Sullivan, her daughter suffered rib fractures as well as “the mental anguish that’s going to carry through the rest of her life.”
“I’m full of rage,” Sullivan has previously stated. “This should never occur. Violence is not an answer for any child, regardless of their appearance, disability, or uniqueness. We need to teach our children that we are all human beings who deserve grace.”
Since the attack, Sullivan’s daughter has been transferred from Richmond Preparatory Charter School to another Staten Island school.
The mother reportedly told Advance that her daughter has been anxious about being attacked again since the assault. After the attack, Sullivan enrolled her daughter in psychiatric treatment.
“We are aware of the incident and its impact on our students and community,” a spokesman for Integration Charter School earlier stated. “We are continuously working to strengthen our core value of community for all students, and we appreciate the support of our families.”
Richmond Preparatory Charter School is an integration charter school.
