Homeless Man Apprehended After Allegedly Trying To Break Into Dead Person’s Home

A homeless man in Clermont was apprehended for burglary following his latest attempt to break into a deceased person’s home.

Deputies responded to a burglary in progress at an unidentified Clermont residence at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. When they arrived, they observed that the side door to the garage was open. They also apprehended Scott Ervin Stencel, 48, who was walking on the front lawn.

The resident clarified that this was a continuous problem. Deputies had previously responded Tuesday night and again in the morning. One of the deputies searched the home for evidence of forced entry and discovered minor pry marks and scuffs on the side door leading to the garage. According to the report, the tenant also gave what seemed to be door-opening tools, which were discovered on a bench near Stencel’s front door.

The resident noted that he wanted to fix his house’s side door because Stencel had previously damaged it while attempting to enter the residence. According to the report, he estimated that the repairs would cost $5.

According to the article, the property was probated, which means it was bequeathed by someone who died. The resident was legally acknowledged as the executor of the will. Additionally, Stencel was issued a trespass warning on April 1 and arrested for trespassing on April 2, according to the report.

Stencel later explained that he entered the covered back porch to grab his personal stuff. According to the report, a criminal history check found he had already been arrested within the recent six months.

The Colorado native was arrested on counts of attempted burglary in an occupied house, burglary (possession of tools), and criminal trespass after being warned. He was taken to Lake County Jail, and bond was set at $8,500.
