Garamendi Criticizes Trump for Cancelling $7.5 Billion in California Clean Energy Projects

Congressman John Garamendi (CA-08) slammed President Trump after the White House and Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought announced the cancellation of $7.5 billion in funding for 223 clean energy projects, including over 70 in California.

Garamendi called the move “a blatant theft from California” and criticized it as retaliation for past political disputes, warning that it will drive energy costs higher for Californians.

He noted that the Department of Energy claimed the projects “did not adequately advance the nation’s energy needs, were not economically viable, and would not provide a positive return on taxpayer dollars,” but provided no supporting analysis. Many of the cancelled projects involved the University of California system, including UC Davis research on concentrated solar power aimed at improving efficiency and lowering costs.

Garamendi accused the federal government of being “captured by President Trump’s politics,” saying the cancellation punishes Democrats and working families while prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires. He urged the media to hold the administration accountable, stressing that Americans deserve the truth about rising energy and health care costs.
