Man to Stand Trial for Allegedly Shooting Pedestrian in Riverside Drive-by

A 27-year-old man accused of shooting at two pedestrians, wounding one, in a drive-by attack in downtown Riverside must stand trial for attempted murder and other charges, a judge ruled Monday.

Hector Alfonso Sanchez Torres of Home Gardens was arrested in March following an investigation by the Riverside Police Department.

At the conclusion of a preliminary hearing Monday, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Francisco Navarro found sufficient evidence to bind Torres over for trial on two counts of attempted murder, as well as one count of firing a gun from a moving vehicle, including sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.

Judge Navarro scheduled a post-preliminary hearing arraignment for Oct. 20 at the Riverside Hall of Justice. Torres is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center on $1 million bail.

According to police, in the predawn hours of March 30, Torres was involved in a dispute with two men, identified in court documents only as “E.F.” and “E.R.,” near University Avenue and Main Street in Riverside’s Entertainment District.

After the altercation, Torres drove back in his vehicle toward the pedestrians. Officer Ryan Railsback said, “The suspect drove along University … and shot at the victims before fleeing.”

One pedestrian was hit in the leg and treated at Riverside Community Hospital, from which he has since recovered. The other targeted victim was not injured.

Metro Team officers later traced leads to Torres, who was taken into custody without incident roughly eight hours after the shooting at a property on Windsong Street in Home Gardens.

Torres has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
