A 25-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday near an elementary school in South Los Angeles, sparking a homicide investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
Officers responded around 12:43 a.m. to the 1100 block of West 97th Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood, where they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The shooting occurred just a block south of 95th Street Elementary School, raising concerns among local residents. Investigators emphasized that the attack was not gang-related, and the victim was not homeless. No bystanders were injured, though nearby buildings were struck by gunfire.
According to NBC Los Angeles, detectives are treating the incident as a robbery-homicide. However, officials have not released details about possible suspects or a motive.
Video from the scene showed evidence markers and shell casings scattered across the street, with the victim’s body covered near the perimeter of the taped-off area.
