Man Arrested for Smashing Car Windows with Ax in City Heights

SAN DIEGO — A man accused of smashing car windows with an ax in San Diego’s City Heights neighborhood was taken into custody early this week, police said.

Officers responded around 2:40 a.m. Monday to the 3800 block of Menlo Avenue, where the suspect, identified as Zan Mar, allegedly vandalized multiple vehicles and tried to damage the apartment complex’s gate, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Neighbors told NBC 7 that 11 cars were damaged along a single block. Victim Zina Vasquez said she discovered her 2017 Nissan Sentra with a smashed windshield and broken headlight as she left for work.

“I ran back inside hysterical, crying. I couldn’t even breathe,” Vasquez said. “It’s sad because you work hard for your stuff, for somebody to do that.”

Police said Mar later returned to the neighborhood, and a resident snapped photos that helped officers identify and arrest him.

Mar was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of felony vandalism, though jail records show he was later released. Neighbors said they have not seen him return to the area since.

No additional details have been released.
