Florida man accused of nearly beating longtime girlfriend to death with baseball bat after she ignored his calls

Police say a Florida man brutally attacked his longtime girlfriend with a baseball bat after she ignored his phone calls.

Authorities arrested Jamie Michael Lane, 51, on one count of attempted felony murder, according to Miami-Dade County court records.

The violence erupted Tuesday inside the Homestead home Lane shared with the victim. Officers said the woman told them she had lived with Lane for four years and dated him for a total of seven years. That day, the couple argued repeatedly. When she stopped answering his calls, Lane allegedly showed up furious.

After the woman refused to let him inside, Lane allegedly kicked down the door and stormed in carrying a wooden baseball bat. He struck her three times — on the forehead, the back of the head, and the left arm — the arrest report says.

“Stop before you kill me,” the woman shouted.

Lane then dropped to his knees, prayed, asked for forgiveness, and fled, police said. A witness confirmed the victim’s account.

Paramedics rushed the woman to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with a left frontal hematoma and possible skull or facial fractures. Investigators later executed a search warrant at the home and found a broken wooden bat believed to be the weapon.

Lane surrendered to police Wednesday. Authorities booked him into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond. Jail records classify the case as domestic violence.

A judge issued a stay-away order to protect the victim. Lane, who has a public defender, is scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 14.
