A 25-year-old man accused of killing and dismembering his Scottish wife remains in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility on $4 million bail while awaiting his next court appearance.
Jonathan Renteria was arrested on Sept. 11 and booked the following day, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
Prosecutors allege he murdered his wife, 37-year-old June Bunyan, who had moved to the U.S. to pursue a career as a lawyer.
Bunyan was last seen alive on Sept. 4. The next day, investigators say Renteria was spotted dropping off the couple’s 1-month-old child at his parents’ home while carrying trash bags with unidentified contents.
Authorities later found Renteria in a Ventura County hotel room suffering from a bloody arm injury. He allegedly admitted to killing his wife during an argument in their Franklin Avenue apartment over her weight.
He faces one felony count each of murder and mutilation/disinterment of human remains, according to the criminal complaint, which states Bunyan was killed on Sept. 4 or 5.
Renteria has pleaded not guilty. He is due back in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on Nov. 18, when a judge is expected to set a date for a preliminary hearing to determine if enough evidence exists to proceed to trial.
