Police: Men Detained After Being Caught Dumping Food Grease Into Miami Storm Drain

Two men were detained and charged after being discovered illegally dumping food grease into a storm drain in Miami, according to police.

On Monday, Miami police began an investigation after receiving an anonymous report and photos from the Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM).

Environmental Crimes officers responded to Northwest 17th Avenue and 29th Street, where they observed a man matching the photograph “actively dumping waste into the drain.” A second male was spotted nearby.

The suspects are Roman Jaquez, 48, and Oscar Brooks Gago, 73.

According to the arrest report, when investigators approached the men, Jaquez “admitted that he had been instructed by Brooks Gago to dispose of cooking grease into the storm drain” and added that “it was a regular practice for the nearby business where they are both employed.”

Brooks Gago, on the other hand, stated that while he directed Jaquez to dispose of the excrement, he did not instruct him to do so in the drain.

Both men were charged with environmental crimes, including deliberate disregard.

According to the arrest record, the firm had 24 hours to clear the storm drain. The identity of the company in question was not revealed.
