California Man Sentenced to Life for Ambushing Sister’s Ex-Boyfriend, Stabbing Him 28 Times

A California man has been sentenced to 51 years to life in prison for killing his sister’s ex-boyfriend outside his apartment, then fleeing the country for nearly two years.

Raymond Lynde, 33, carried out the killing of 23-year-old Ariel Burquez in July 2020 outside Burquez’s apartment complex in Chula Vista, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

Lynde had recently been released from a 12-year prison sentence for armed robberies in Orange County. Soon after, he ambushed Burquez, stabbing him 28 times and leaving him at his front door. Burquez later collapsed and died.

After the attack, Lynde threw away the knife, hid his bloody clothes, and escaped to Mexico. He remained there undetected for almost two years until the U.S. Marshals Service arrested him in May 2022. His capture led to trial and conviction.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan described the killing as:

“This was a savage murder that was motivated by animosity and revenge. I hope today’s sentence closes a chapter and brings a measure of justice for the family of Mr. Burquez. We’re grateful to our law enforcement colleagues in Mexico for their help in bringing the defendant back to San Diego to be held accountable for his vicious crime.”

Lynde’s sister dated Burquez for six months between 2018 and 2019. After their breakup, Burquez allegedly vandalized her property and reportedly shot at her in the weeks before the murder.

During the trial, Lynde admitted stabbing Burquez but argued it was self-defense. The jury rejected his claim and returned a guilty verdict.

  • Defendant: Raymond Lynde, 33
  • Victim: Ariel Burquez, 23

  • Sentence: 51 years to life in prison

  • Crime: Premeditated ambush, stabbing, and fleeing the country

Authorities underscored the brutality of the attack and the importance of justice for the victim’s family. Officials and residents alike were reminded of the devastating consequences of revenge-driven violence and the value of international cooperation in capturing fugitives.

With Lynde sentenced to life in prison, the case stands as a stark example of how retaliation can spiral into tragedy. It also highlights the vital role of cross-border law enforcement in holding violent offenders accountable.
