A collision on Highway 65 at Famoso Road claimed the lives of two people, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash involved a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle, shutting down both northbound and southbound lanes.
The crash happened when a 76-year-old man driving a 2016 Honda Fit eastbound on Famoso Road failed to stop at a posted stop sign. He entered the intersection with Highway 65, where a 55-year-old man driving a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer southbound struck the Honda on the driver’s side.
The impact sent the Honda spinning out of control before it stopped on the east dirt shoulder. The Freightliner also lost control, hit a dirt embankment, and overturned, blocking the southbound lane and partially obstructing the northbound lane.
Both the Honda’s driver and his 66-year-old female passenger suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The Freightliner driver sustained minor to moderate injuries and was taken to Kern Medical Hospital.
Authorities confirmed alcohol and drugs did not contribute to the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials will release more information as it becomes available.
