Karina Cooper Sentenced To Life For First-degree Murder Of Husband

Karina Cooper, who was found guilty of first-degree murder of her husband, was sentenced on Friday.

Karina Cooper was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole, the Tama County Sheriff’s Office stated Friday afternoon.

A Linn County jury convicted Karina of first-degree murder in July 2021 for the death of her husband, Ryan Cooper.

Near June 2021, the Tama County Sheriff’s Office was summoned to a home near Traer where Ryan Cooper had been shot many times. Ryan died from his injuries at the scene. According to the criminal complaint, Karina told witnesses that she “wanted Ryan dead and could shoot him in the face.”

Karina was ultimately arrested and charged with first-degree murder in February 2024. The trial, scheduled for July 2025, was transferred to Linn County to ensure impartiality. Following several hours of deliberation, the jury returned their decision, siding with the prosecution.

Following the sentencing, the Tama County Sheriff’s Office issued a letter thanking law enforcement and the legal counsel for their efforts on the case and expressing their sympathies.
