A Louisiana middle school math teacher was arrested after a random drug check allegedly revealed cocaine in her bag.
Virginia Somers, 47, works as a math intervention teacher at Westdale Middle School in Baton Rouge. According to a probable cause report, police arrested her Tuesday after a K-9 with the East Baton Rouge Parish School Drug Task Force detected drugs in her book bag.
The dog, named Vimsen, alerted officers, who then searched Somers’ wallet and allegedly found cocaine. A field test confirmed the substance.
After being read her rights, Somers reportedly told officers the cocaine belonged to a friend but admitted she had used it at a tailgate outside an LSU football game the previous weekend, the affidavit said.
Police then searched her Honda CR-V with her consent. Officers allegedly discovered marijuana, two pipes, and lighters in a small gray bag inside the glove compartment.
Authorities said they confiscated 0.8 grams of cocaine and 0.5 grams of marijuana.
Somers now faces charges of:
-
Possession of cocaine
-
Possession of marijuana
-
Possession of drug paraphernalia
-
Violation of controlled dangerous substances in a school zone
She was set to appear in court Wednesday.
Following the arrest, the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System issued a statement:
