City of Crisfield officials have confirmed that the search for a woman last seen near the Somers Cove Marina has ended tragically.
According to officials, Theresa Vandenberg and her husband sailed into the marina over the weekend for the Marine Trawler Owner Association event. According to the Facebook page of Somers Cove Marina, Vandenberg was last seen traveling to her boat on the E pier. Officials claim she never came.
Just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, Crisfield officials said that they had discovered Vandenberg, but that the search had not yielded the desired results.
“Our condolences to her husband Tom and their families,” a social media post from Crisfield reads.
Authorities later confirmed that Vandenberg was discovered dead on the ground near the water, not in it. Officials stated that no foul play is suspected. Her body is being taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to ascertain the exact cause of death.
According to Crisfield officials, the search for Vandenberg on Monday night included marina personnel, fire, ambulance, police, the Somerset County Sheriff, DNR, MSP, and the Salisbury and Sharptown dive teams. Crisfield Mayor Darlene Taylor announced on September 16 that the search began Tuesday morning.
