A Mexican citizen charged by a federal grand jury for illegally reentering the United States was sentenced to time served yesterday by U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Saporito Jr., according to U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus.
Jose Miguel Molina-Echevarria, 40, had already been imprisoned for nearly four months after being arrested on May 18 in Franklin County for driving under the influence and related crimes, according to a press statement from Gurganus.
Gurganus said Molina-Echevarria was already deported from the United States in 2024. He pleaded guilty to illegally reentering the United States prior to punishment, according to Gurganus.
The case was investigated by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations.
Assistant United States Attorneys Francis P. Sempa and Tatum Wilson prosecuted the case.
Gurganus said Molina-Echavarria is still facing state charges for the alleged DUI incident in Franklin County.
According to Gurganus, ICE has also lodged a detainer against him pending deportation proceedings.
