A 19-year-old man from the District was sentenced to 14 years in prison for perpetrating two armed carjackings just days apart, one of which entailed using a stolen vehicle to block in a second victim at a gas station.
In June, Erick Alvarenga pled guilty to two counts of unarmed carjacking and possessing a handgun during a violent felony. On Friday, a Superior Court judge sentenced him to 60 months for each firearm offense and 84 months for each carjacking. The sentences for the January incident will run consecutively to those for the December offense, for a total of 168 months in prison.
The first event occurred at approximately 4:45 a.m. on December 28, 2024, in the 6100 block of Eastern Avenue, NE. Alvarenga and his co-defendant, 20-year-old Malik Kearney, approached a man sitting in his Jeep SUV. One of them was armed with a revolver as they pulled the victim out of his car before racing away with it.
Less than a week later, on January 3, 2025, the two struck again, this time about 3 p.m. on the 4200 block of Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, NE. According to prosecutors, the couple utilized the previously stolen Jeep to trap another driver who had just completed filling up his Dodge vehicle. Kearney allegedly approached the man with a gun as Alvarenga boxed in the vehicle. After ejecting the driver, they escaped in both vehicles.
Both suspects were arrested later that evening. Law authorities recovered two firearms from where they were apprehended, one with a defaced serial number and the other recognized as a privately manufactured “ghost gun.”
Kearney, who pled guilty in June, is slated to be sentenced on October 10.
The Metropolitan Police Department led the investigation, which was assisted by the United States Attorney’s Office. Officials verified that both guys have been in jail since their arrests.
