Texas man taken into custody in Lafayette Parish for attempted Scam

A Texas man has been arrested for attempting to scam a Lafayette Parish resident out of a large sum of money.

On Monday, August 25, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., patrol deputies from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office were called by the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland about a possible fraud targeting a Lafayette Parish resident. A representative from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office stated that they nearly defrauded the victim of an undisclosed sum of money.

During the investigation, detectives identified the culprit as Marlon Edwin De Almeida, 23, of Houston, Texas. The victim received a message that his digital payment account had been hijacked, followed by an email from someone acting as a federal government agent. According to investigators, the impostor falsely claimed to be investigating fraudulent behavior and advised the victim to withdraw a substantial sum of cash and wait for a “courier” to collect it for safekeeping.

Investigators used surveillance and intelligence operations to watch the scenario as De Almeida arrived at the victim’s house to take control of the money. Patrol deputies promptly arrested him.

De Almeida was arrested and charged with online impersonation and theft.

This case is still under investigation. Additional information will be published as it becomes available.
