Southern Arizona Weather Alert: Blowing Dust Reduces Visibility From 1PM To 4PM

Drivers in southern and central Arizona should be prepared for hazardous traffic conditions Monday, as a series of blowing dust advisories will be in force throughout the afternoon and evening. Winds from thunderstorms are predicted to reduce visibility to less than a mile at times, with sudden whiteouts possible on wide stretches of highway.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix and Tucson reports that advisories are in effect in several places. Between 1 and 4 p.m. Monday, the Tucson metro region, the Tohono O’odham Nation, and south-central Pinal County will be subject to dust concerns. Storms may sweep dust across western Pima County, including Ajo and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, by late afternoon, with severe conditions lasting until 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Gila Bend, Queen Creek, and a vast area of Pinal County are under a separate advisory from 2 to 6 p.m.

Hazards will be particularly severe along Interstate 10 and roads 8 and 85, where near-zero visibility may cause abrupt slowdowns or closures. Officials advise drivers to avoid driving during peak hours and to follow the “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” instructions, which include pulling off the road, turning off lights, and keeping their feet off the brake pedal until conditions improve.

People with respiratory issues should stay indoors to avoid dust exposure. The meteorological agency warns that if storms persist into the night, they might issue additional advisories.
