A 28-year-old off-duty NYPD officer was taken into custody early Sunday morning after an alleged fight that led to assault charges inside the 40th Precinct, according to official reports.
Shelia Nunez-Lopez, an NYPD officer, was arrested around 1:40 a.m. following a physical altercation, according to authorities. The circumstances leading up to the confrontation have not been revealed, but police verified she was off duty at the time of the incident and is now facing official assault charges.
NunezLopez was arrested in the South Bronx, where the 40th Precinct includes Mott Haven, Port Morris, and Melrose. The NYPD did not disclose any additional information on the victim or the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault. It is also unknown whether any injuries were reported or if more charges will be brought.
The agency claimed that the incident is being investigated internally, as is customary when an officer is arrested, particularly in cases involving alleged violence.
Nunez-Lopez has been placed to modified duty while the investigation is ongoing.
