California Loses $12 Million Federal Grant Over Transgender Policies

The Trump administration cut a $12 million grant for California’s Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP), which focuses on preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Officials said California lost the funding because the state refused to remove what they described as “radical gender ideology” from its school curriculum.

The Big Picture

Andrew Gradison, acting assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, announced the decision on Fox & Friends. He warned that states promoting such ideologies will lose federal support.

  • Gradison confirmed the department is reviewing school curricula nationwide.

  • Nearly 40 states could soon face warnings to revise their programs or risk losing funding.

  • PREP mainly serves adolescents who are homeless, in foster care, or living in areas with high teen birth rates, teaching them abstinence and contraception.

The White House criticized California schools as “hotbeds of woke ideology” and blamed both the governor and teachers’ unions for enforcing liberal policies.

Driving the News

Before the funding cut, President Trump warned on social media that any California school district refusing to follow his transgender policies could lose federal support. He gave no details on how this would be enforced.

  • While local and state governments cover most school funding, federal aid supplements key programs.

  • In July, the administration sued California over its policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports, claiming it violates federal anti-discrimination laws.

  • In February, Trump directed officials to block federal funding for schools that let transgender female athletes participate in female categories.
