TSA Could Stop You for Carrying This Item in Your Bag — See the New Rule and Why It’s Banned

Travelers passing through TSA checkpoints may want to double-check their bags before heading to the airport. The Transportation Security Administration recently updated its list of prohibited items, adding new restrictions on certain beauty products.

What Did TSA Ban?

According to the Code of Federal Regulations, cordless hair-care tools are now considered hazardous, and TSA will enforce stricter rules:

  • Cordless curling irons or flat irons with gas cartridges — banned in checked luggage.

  • Butane-fueled curling irons or flat irons — banned in checked luggage.

  • Gas refills (spare cartridges) for curling or flat irons — not allowed in checked luggage.

On the other hand, electric curling irons and hair straighteners that plug into outlets are still permitted in both carry-on and checked bags, as long as their heating elements are secured with protective covers to prevent accidental activation.

Most Common Items Confiscated by TSA

According to UponArriving, travelers most often have to give up:

  • Oversized liquids, gels, and aerosols (LAGs)

  • Pocket knives and small blades

  • Lithium batteries & power banks

  • Firearms

  • Food and spreadable items

  • Gases and aerosols

  • Flammable liquids and solids

  • Oxidizers and organic peroxides

  • Toxic and infectious materials

  • Radioactive substances
