Authorities searching for 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro uncovered disturbing family history this week, confirming that the baby’s mother is related to a convicted murderer.
Rebecca and Jake Haro reported their infant missing on Aug. 14, claiming a stranger knocked Rebecca unconscious in the parking lot of a Yucaipa Big 5 Sporting Goods store before abducting Emmanuel. She was found with a black eye.
Deputies launched an extensive search, using helicopters and K-9 units, but never located a suspect or vehicle. Because of the lack of details, officials did not issue an AMBER Alert.
Days later, suspicions shifted. Investigators said the Haros were not fully cooperating. They noted that child welfare officials had removed the couple’s 2-year-old from their custody, and records showed Jake Haro has a felony conviction for willful child cruelty. Detectives have since searched the couple’s Cabazon home with cadaver dogs and seized Jake’s vehicle, cellphones, and electronics.
Now, KTLA confirmed that Rebecca’s brother, James Beushausen, is serving 50 years to life for the 2017 murder of his girlfriend, Jaylynn Amanda Keith, in Palm Springs. Prosecutors said Beushausen staged the killing to look like a suicide, bludgeoning Keith before shooting her in the head and calling 911 to claim she killed herself. A jury convicted him in 2018.
Despite growing scrutiny, the Haros maintain their innocence. Their attorney, Vincent Hughes, accused law enforcement of focusing too narrowly on the parents instead of expanding the search.
“They don’t care what anyone thinks about them,” Hughes said. “They just want the child to be found. They want him home.”
Emmanuel remains missing nearly a week after his disappearance, and the case has been labeled suspicious from the start by neighbors and investigators alike.
