A former Harris County jailer accused of renting a luxury car and then selling it on Facebook Marketplace has been arrested.
Stevie Mosley, 23, faces a felony charge of fraudulent transfer of a vehicle. Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) took her into custody Tuesday at a local bail bond company. She posted a $10,000 bond on Wednesday.
Her alleged accomplice, Andrea Johnson, 24, remains wanted.
Under investigation before arrest
HCSO confirmed Mosley resigned in April while under internal affairs investigation for fraternization with an inmate. That inmate, Johnson, is now her co-defendant. Officials later determined Mosley was ineligible for rehire.
Deputies recently recovered Mosley’s badge and uniform, which investigators say she used to gain the victim’s trust during the scheme.
How it unfolded
-
In late July, a Houston man rented his Lexus ES 300 through Top Tier Fleet, a local luxury rental company.
-
Mosley and Johnson rented the car for four days, but soon afterward, the Lexus appeared for sale on Facebook Marketplace under the fake name “Amber West.”
-
“It was a whole fiasco. This is the first time this has ever happened to me,” said company owner Christopher Orji.
The women stopped responding to messages, and the car’s tracker went dead. Orji and his business partner tried to recover it but eventually activated the kill switch.
The victim’s loss
A buyer, who asked not to be identified, said Mosley met him in uniform, wearing an armored vest and showing her badge.
“I was raised to trust the cops, and she kept saying, ‘I’m law enforcement,’ you know, in a uniform,” the victim said.
He paid $2,000 via Zelle as a deposit, then wired $8,000 the next day. Mosley claimed the transfer didn’t go through and demanded another $3,500 for the key fob.
She gave him a bill of sale under the name Amber West and later tried to sell him a Toyota Camry, convincing him to hand over $4,500 more for what she described as their “auto business.”
In total, the victim lost $18,000. The true owner, however, eventually recovered the Lexus after the kill switch was triggered.
Victim speaks out
“To just trick me with some uniform, but it’s like, a real uniform … I’m ashamed,” the victim said. “They should not let their uniform just be loose out there, their ID, just be loose out there. Who knows what else she’s doing right now with that ID?”
Authorities say Johnson is still at large as the investigation continues.
