A federal grand jury has indicted Joseph Allen Davis, a 19-year-old Sacramento resident, on charges of felony firearm possession, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced. The indictment stems from an April 12 shooting at Rainbow City Park in Davis that left three people injured.
Following the shooting, investigators identified Davis as a suspect in the gunfire exchange. Officers executed a search warrant at his apartment and recovered a short-barrel AR-15-style pistol. Because Davis already had a felony firearm conviction, his possession of the weapon violated federal law.
U.S. Attorney Eric Grant said the case reflects efforts to hold offenders accountable for firearms misuse and violent crime.
The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the FBI, Davis and Sacramento Police Departments, and the District Attorney’s Offices in Yolo and Sacramento Counties. Prosecutors Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Lee and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew De Moura will present the case at trial.
If convicted, Davis faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, with sentencing subject to federal guidelines and statutory factors.
The indictment is part of Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative targeting illegal immigration, cartel activity, and transnational crime. It also falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a DOJ program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence through coordinated enforcement and prevention strategies.
