Man charged with attempting to set fire to South Sacramento home with parents inside

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Authorities accused a man of attempting to set fire to a South Sacramento home while his parents were still inside.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a welfare check on the 3600 block of 45th Avenue just after 5 p.m.

Relatives told deputies that 37-year-old Somekitt Say argued with his 80-year-old father and allegedly tried to ignite the house with his elderly parents inside. Other family members nearby managed to extinguish the flames before they spread.

Deputies said Say fled the scene but was located a short distance away.

They arrested him without incident and booked him into the county jail.

“He has an expansive arrest record with us. We’ve contacted him a bunch of times, so we’re well aware of who he is. We’ve been to that house several times for him and not antics to this severity by any stretch,” said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office has since issued an emergency protective order to legally shield the parents from their son.
