Man Assaults Woman in L.A., Then Fatally Shoots Her During Intervention

Los Angeles – A violent chain of events erupted Saturday night in L.A.’s Harvard Heights neighborhood when a man accused of assaulting a woman opened fire, injuring two people and fatally shooting the woman he was attacking.

The Los Angeles Police Department reported that witnesses saw the suspect beating a woman outside an apartment complex on South St. Andrews Place near Pico Boulevard around 10:30 p.m.

“The woman was screaming for help,” an LAPD spokesperson told UCSportsNation, early Sunday. “A vehicle passing by with a husband, wife and son saw what was happening and the father attempted to stop the man assaulting the woman.”

The suspect then pulled out a gun and fired at both the vehicle carrying the family and the woman he had been attacking, police said. Bullets struck the woman and the man who tried to protect her.

Police identified the victim only as an Asian woman, withholding her name and age.

First responders performed CPR at the scene before transporting both victims to a nearby hospital, video obtained by KTLA showed. Authorities said the man suffered at least one gunshot wound but remained in stable condition, while the woman was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police said it was unclear whether the other two people inside the white SUV were injured, though a bullet hole was visible on the side of the vehicle.

At first, investigators believed the suspect had fled and remained at large. However, shortly before 7 a.m., police told KTLA that he had taken his own life on the same street where the shooting happened.

His identity has not yet been released.
