Bees Defender Bilbrey Shows Strength On & Off Field

Being a stand-out student athlete and juggling academics presents challenges, even under the best circumstances.

Upperman’s head football coach Adam Caine lauded senior offensive and defensive lineman Tyler Bilbrey as someone who has faced and overcome trials throughout his young life.

Bilbrey, a five-foot-eleven-inch, 240 pound offensive guard and defensive tackle started all nine games for Canie and the Bees so far this season.

To this point, Bilbrey made 42 tackles total and one tackle for loss. Bilbrey averages just under five tackles per game for Upperman, according to Coach Caine.

“He wasn’t with us last season,” Caine said. “He transferred back from Cincinnati. It’s a home situation that would send most of us down the wrong path. He has been a joy to be around and a fun kid to coach this year.”

Caine pointed out that even after the struggles Bilbrey experienced in his home life, that he does not wear that situation as a weight around his neck. He takes pride in himself, his accomplishments and cares for his teammates like brothers.

Bilbrey has a job and a girlfriend, plays football and takes care of his academic responsibilities.

“He seems to be making a lot of good choices and good decisions,” Caine said. “For him to be able to function at all, much less the way he has been doing is very admirable, and I have nothing but love and respect for the kid, and he’s also been a really good football player for us.”

Upperman’s Tyler Bilbrey is the Legacy Award recipient for October, 2019, and now a qualifier for a $1000 scholarship presented by Legacy XI of Cookeville.
