Miami Police Officer Arrested for Missing Court Hearing Over Littering Case

Authorities arrested Miami police officer Guillermo Arteaga on Tuesday, years after he allegedly skipped a court hearing related to a 2020 littering citation in Broward County.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission cited Arteaga, now 35, on April 18, 2020, after an officer reportedly saw him dumping trash along Pembroke Road and U.S. 27 in Pembroke Pines. The citation stated the litter weighed less than 15 pounds or 27 cubic feet, and it ordered Arteaga to pay a $105 fine.

Court records show Arteaga failed to appear for a June 2023 hearing on the matter, prompting a judge to issue a warrant for his arrest. Officers took him into custody Tuesday, and he was later released on a $50 bond.

The Miami Police Department confirmed Arteaga has been relieved of duty while Internal Affairs investigates.

“We hold our officers to the highest standards and will take all necessary action to address any misconduct or allegations of misconduct by our members,” the department said in a statement.
