Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that she supports legislation in the Mexican Senate to bring Palestinian orphans to Mexico.
Sheinbaum said Mexico will remain open to helping during this and other humanitarian crises when necessary.
The proposal, drafted by Sen. Gerardo Fernández Noroña, calls for Mexico to welcome orphans from Palestine, noting the country has a history of taking in children displaced by conflict.
Sheinbaum also reaffirmed her government’s support for a two-state solution in the region—one for Palestine and one for Israel—as a path toward ending long-standing tensions in the Middle East.
The move comes amid ongoing military conflict in the Gaza Strip, which has lasted for the past two years. Last week, Israel’s Security Cabinet approved a measure to take full control of all Palestinian territory—a decision opposed by most nations.
According to United Nations estimates, 18,000 children have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 2023. Israel has also continued to block humanitarian aid from reaching the region.
Palestinian officials report that more than 50,000 children have died from hunger, while at least 242,000 suffer from health problems caused by a lack of food and clean water.
