Houston police have released surveillance footage of a man wanted in the fatal stabbing of a 77-year-old cyclist in the city’s Second Ward.
The Attack
On Thursday morning, Anival Patricio Elvir Ortiz, 77, was riding his bike to work along a trail near Canal Street when he was attacked and stabbed around 6 a.m., police said. The assault was captured on camera.
Ortiz managed to ride 10–15 minutes to his job at The Spencer Company on North Drennan Street before collapsing.
“He might not have realized how severe his injuries were and just kept riding,” said Detective Sgt. Mark Holbrook. “Eventually, he succumbed to his injuries.”
Ortiz was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died.
The newly released video shows a man wearing a dark blue or black shirt and khaki shorts walking past a METRO Rail stop. His face is clearly visible. Police say the suspect left the area heading south on Lockwood Drive after the attack.
Investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the man to contact the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600.
