Authorities charged 14-year-old Trevor Lee with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of his parents in Florida.
Lee reportedly called 911 from a church near his Middleburg home, telling dispatchers what had happened. According to Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook, Trevor waited there until deputies arrived to take him into custody.
Investigators identified the victims as David Lee, 44, and Brandy Smith Lee, 45.
Family and friends described them as loving and supportive. Sheriff Cook said they were shot inside their home following what appears to have been a domestic argument.
“It appears there was some sort of domestic argument last night between Trevor Lee and his parents and that this shooting culminated from that argument,” Cook stated.
Family members and friends expressed disbelief and heartbreak. James Lewis, a cousin of Brandy Smith, called Trevor a “good kid” and a “straight-A student.”
“I don’t know what caused him to do it,” Lewis told KGNS TV. “He had good parents. So, for him to do that, you know, we don’t know why.”
Trevor’s best friend, Kyree Bamon, described him as “funny, charismatic,” and someone who “always brought good energy.”
“They were probably the best, or one of the best, families I knew,” Kyree said. “They treated me very well. And told me all the time they loved me like a son.”
Florida Teen Allegedly Killed Parents: Investigation Ongoing
Deputies recovered the firearm at the scene, believed to belong to the parents. Sheriff Cook confirmed Trevor and his parents were the only people in the house at the time.
Investigators are now piecing together what happened and looking into possible warning signs or behavioral issues.
Trevor Lee was set to start high school next week. Instead, he now sits in jail, facing charges that could change his life forever.
