A federal jury in Miami has convicted Keenan Johnson, a 36-year-old former homicide detective with the Miami-Dade Police Department, on three counts of perjury for giving false testimony under oath during a 2022 evidentiary hearing.
United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the verdict following a five-day trial in the Southern District of Florida before Chief Judge Cecilia Altonaga.
False Testimony Exposed
On April 4, 2022, Johnson testified during a hearing on a motion to suppress evidence. During his testimony, he repeatedly denied that a specific phone number was his. He also denied using the number to communicate with a witness, receiving text messages from that witness, or using the number on official police flyers.
However, the court found discrepancies in his statements, and the judge asked the prosecution to further investigate.
Evidence later revealed that Johnson had:
-
Used the disputed phone number for over four years
-
Contacted the witness linked to the suppression hearing
-
Engaged in a 10-minute phone call with the witness the night before the hearing
-
Deleted the number from his phone after the hearing
Charges and Sentencing
Johnson was indicted on July 31, 2024, and now faces up to five years in federal prison for each perjury count. His sentencing is scheduled for October 3, 2025, in Miami.
Investigation and Prosecution
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Miami and the Miami-Dade County Office of the Inspector General.
Assistant U.S. Attorney E. Jackson Boggs Jr. of the Middle District of Florida, appointed as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for this case, is leading the prosecution.
This conviction marks a significant step in holding law enforcement accountable for integrity in the judicial process.
