Lisandro “Chando” Madrigal, founder of the now-closed Chando’s Tacos chain, appeared in Sacramento Superior Court on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty to two felony charges related to domestic violence. Just days after his popular taco restaurants temporarily closed their doors, Madrigal stood before Judge Peter Williams maintaining his innocence.

Wearing a motorcycle jacket, Balenciaga sneakers, and jeans, Madrigal requested a trial on charges filed back in March 2024. He had already entered a not guilty plea during a previous arraignment on September 19. Thursday’s court session was brief, following a sidebar between Judge Williams, Madrigal’s attorney, and the prosecutor. During the hearing, Williams also rescinded a bench warrant that had been issued after Madrigal failed to appear in court for a June hearing.

According to the criminal complaint, Madrigal allegedly “willfully and unlawfully inflict(ed) corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition” and used “force and violence … resulting in the infliction of serious bodily injury” against a woman he reportedly dated. Both charges are classified as “serious” felonies and could carry enhanced penalties if he’s convicted at trial.

Madrigal’s attorney, Sarbdeep Atwal of Yuba City, stated via email that the criminal case has no connection to the recent closure of Chando’s Tacos or Madrigal’s other business operations. On Tuesday, Madrigal confirmed that the Sacramento-area taco locations were closed “for now.” The company later  cited “economic factors” in a social media post explaining the decision.

Madrigal is planning a new venture—Chando’s Cantina—at the former Solomon’s location at 730 K St. in downtown Sacramento. As of Thursday, there were no new updates on the restaurant’s status on its website or social media
