A Galveston man, Alan Anthony Gomez, has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for drug trafficking in the Eastern District of Texas. Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs confirmed the sentencing in a recent press release from the  U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The arrest followed a traffic stop in Liberty County last November. Gomez was riding in the passenger seat when the vehicle was pulled over under unclear circumstances. Conflicting stories and a strong smell of marijuana led authorities to search the car. They uncovered nine kilograms of cocaine hidden inside—far more than just the marijuana or air fresheners they might have expected. Gomez immediately admitted the bundles contained cocaine, not fentanyl, according to court records.

U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone sentenced Gomez to 87 months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Gomez didn’t contest the charges and accepted the lengthy sentence.

The case was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Grove led the prosecution that resulted in Gomez’s conviction.
