A 38-year-old man from Coconut Grove is facing a felony charge after allegedly threatening a mass shooting at Baptist Health South Miami Hospital, reportedly over a phone call that wasn’t transferred.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Courtney Matthew Harris called the hospital around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday trying to reach his grandmother, a patient at the facility located at 6200 SW 73rd Street.
When the call wasn’t transferred, Harris allegedly became angry and told a hospital staff member,
“I’m about to load up my rifle and come down there. I will load up my 80-round clip and wipe all of y’all from existence.”
Deputies said the threat caused panic and fear among hospital staff.
Authorities were able to trace the call to Harris and arrested him Wednesday morning at his home on the 3500 block of Florida Avenue. He reportedly gave a full confession during questioning.
Harris has been charged with making a false report concerning the use of firearms in a violent manner, a felony offense. As of Thursday, he remains in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a $5,000 bond.
