California – The man suspected of fatally shooting four people inside a New York City office building on Monday has connections to Southern California.

Authorities identified the 27-year-old gunman as Shane Tamura, a former football player at Granada Hills Charter School in Los Angeles County.

People who knew Tamura during his time as a young athlete say he never showed signs of trouble and seemed solely focused on football.

“He just talked to us about making good decisions and knowing that you represent your last name, your family… also represent the organization you play for,” said student Abraxas Scott. “That will be a part of how people see us, but I also feel like the way we play on the field should show who we are even better.”

“I was shocked. It was a little shocking. I was also… I was actually scared to practice, too. It just shows how small the world is to me and, you know, it could be the people around you—you never know. It could be people that you’re best friends with, it could be your family. You never know,” added student Zachary Longoria.
