(WTAJ) — Grass-fed ground beef distributed to six states is being recalled due to possible E. coli contamination.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced a recall of more than 2,800 pounds of raw 90/10 ground beef processed by Mountain West Food Group, LLC, based in Idaho.
The product, labeled “Forward Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef,” was produced on Dec. 16 and packaged in 16-ounce containers. It was shipped to distributors in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Washington for further distribution to retail stores.
According to FSIS, the potential contamination was identified during routine testing. Sampling results showed the presence of E. coli O26.
No illnesses have been confirmed so far. However, FSIS warned that people can become sick from shiga toxin-producing strains of E. coli up to 28 days, with an average of 34 days, after exposure.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said common symptoms of E. coli infection include stomach cramps and diarrhea, as well as vomiting, bloody stools or urine, fever, and dehydration. In severe cases, the infection can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that may cause kidney failure and can be fatal.
Young children, adults over 65, and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious complications. Anyone who believes they may be sick from an E. coli infection is urged to contact a healthcare provider immediately.
FSIS is advising consumers who purchased the recalled beef, or who may still have it in their freezer, to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.
The recalled product can be identified by the “Forward Farms” and “Grass-Fed Ground Beef” labels. The packaging lists a use-by or freeze-by date of Jan. 13, 2026, along with establishment number 2083, shown as “Est. 2018,” printed on the side.
