Flooding on Churn Creek Road near Mountain Mike’s Pizza and Cocos Mongolian Grill in Redding, Calif., followed a heavy rainstorm on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025.
REDDING, Calif. — Heavy rain flooded several roads and neighborhoods across Redding on Sunday night, stranding vehicles, causing power outages in some areas, and prompting warnings from law enforcement and county emergency officials.
Dispatchers issued a countywide flood alert, reporting closures in both directions near railroad tracks and ongoing water rescues for stranded motorists. Redding police urged drivers to avoid crossing flooded roads, warning that even shallow water can disable vehicles or sweep them away. Officials said conditions changed rapidly as water levels continued to rise.
California Highway Patrol dispatch logs showed flooding disrupted traffic on Interstate 5 near the Cypress Avenue interchange. Rising water stranded at least one vehicle and blocked multiple lanes starting around 4:57 p.m. Sunday. Motorists reported flooding on the southbound on-ramp. Officers responded, carried out intermittent traffic releases, and checked on disabled vehicles. By about 7 p.m., crews reopened two northbound lanes, though one lane remained closed as crews worked to clear remaining hazards.
Officials confirmed flooding in several areas, including Mary Lake Park, where water levels rose significantly; Shasta View, where floodwaters entered the neighborhood and forced a road closure; Capricorn Street, where water rose above fire hydrants in some sections; and parts of South Redding, where localized flooding affected backyards and low-lying areas. Flooding also impacted southbound Interstate 5 near the South Bonnyview area. Shasta County emergency officials advised residents to shelter in place and avoid driving due to dangerous conditions.
Redding Mayor Mike Littau provided a late Sunday update, saying city staff activated an emergency response. The fire chief and staff began setting up an Emergency Operations Center to coordinate flood response efforts. Public Works and Redding Electric Utility crews worked to clear streets and restore power. Police and fire crews continued water rescues, and officials confirmed one fatality.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter for people displaced by flooding at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2850 Foothill Blvd. The shelter is open, but pets are not allowed.
Road closures included Jewell Lane; Highway 273 at Branstetter; Highway 273 at Buenaventura; Shasta View Drive between Tarmac and Old Alturas; Old Alturas between Shasta View and Victor; and North Bonnyview and East Bonnyview.
City officials urged residents to report emergencies and safety concerns and to stay alert as conditions continue to evolve.
