California tech firms team up with federal government to offer $200K jobs without a degree

CALIFORNIA — The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced a new federal initiative on December 15 called the U.S. Tech Force.

The program plans to recruit about 1,000 technology professionals, including engineers, AI specialists, data scientists, and cybersecurity experts, to serve in government positions.

These roles offer salaries of up to $200,000 per year, along with professional development opportunities during two-year assignments.

California-based companies partnering with Tech Force include Adobe, AMD, Anduril, Apple, Box, C3.ai, Coinbase, Databricks, Google Public Sector, Nvidia, OpenAI, Palantir, Robinhood, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Uber, xAI, and Zoom.

Other early private-sector partners include Amazon Web Services, Dell Technologies, Docusign, and IBM.

According to the program’s website, applicants do not need a traditional college degree. However, candidates must show strong technical skills through work experience, projects, or certifications.

OPM Director Scott Kupor described the initiative as a clarion call.

“Tech Force offers the chance to build and lead projects of national importance, while creating powerful career opportunities in both public service and the private sector,” Kupor said.

The White House announced and supports the program as part of a nationwide push to modernize federal technology systems and strengthen artificial intelligence capabilities across government agencies.

Tech Force participants will work across several federal departments, including the Department of Defense, Treasury, and Health and Human Services.

Most positions will be based in Washington, D.C., though some roles may be available at agency locations nationwide. Remote work options vary depending on the agency and position.

The standard commitment runs for two years, with possible extensions based on agency needs and participant interest.
