Police in Biloxi, Mississippi, issued a warning to shoppers after discovering razor blades hidden inside bread and muffins at two Walmart stores.
Customers found the sharp objects inserted through the plastic wrapping of bakery items. Investigators have not yet determined whether someone tampered with the products before or after staff stocked them on store shelves. Police urged the public to stay alert in case additional Walmart products had been deliberately altered to harm consumers.
According to The Sun, Walmart employees later discovered several more razor blades pushed through the plastic wrapping of bread and other baked goods. Although no injuries have been reported, Biloxi police said they would continue investigating by reviewing weeks of security footage.
Biloxi Police Department spokesperson Lt. Candace Young said investigators initially struggled because they did not know when the tampering occurred. Officers reviewed months of surveillance footage from the bakery section but did not immediately spot suspicious behavior, raising concerns for customer safety.
Walmart staff conducted inventory checks and removed potentially contaminated products from shelves as a precaution. Investigators also worked to determine whether the blades were inserted inside the store or somewhere along the supply chain. Young noted that authorities found no razor blades in warehouse products, suggesting the tampering likely occurred inside the stores.
While reviewing surveillance footage, police later identified a person of interest. Authorities released an image of a person wearing a green sweatshirt and a fanny pack, standing near a Walmart entrance while carrying a full plastic bag. Police described the individual as a potential suspect seen “tampering with bakery items,” though they had not identified a motive at the time.
Concerned Biloxi shoppers shared their worries on social media, with some saying they planned to avoid Walmart bakery items until officials resolved the situation.
Police have since arrested a Texas woman in connection with the case. Authorities charged 33-year-old Camille Benson with attempted mayhem after accusing her of inserting razor blades into loaves of bread at two Walmart locations on Tuesday. Her bond has been set at $100,000.
Lt. Young said the incidents began on December 5 and were initially believed to involve only one Walmart store. Two days later, a customer discovered another razor blade inside a loaf of bread at a second location, prompting a broader investigation.
Although the crime is rare, similar incidents have occurred in the past. In Australia in 2018, authorities found blades hidden inside strawberries, triggering a nationwide recall. In 2019, shoppers in the UK discovered sewing needles concealed in candy and berries, leading police to urge the public to carefully inspect food products before consuming them.
